“What a good artist understands is that nothing comes from nowhere. All creative work builds on what came before. Nothing is completely original. It’s right there in the Bible: ‘There is nothing new under the sun.’ (Ecclesiastes 1:9)” ~from Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon~
I ran across the book, Steal Like An Artist, by Austin Kleon at Amazon the other day. What caught my attention was the fact that he has over 500 reviews for his book and over 300 of those were 5 Star reviews. So, I ordered it for my Kindle and within minutes I was reading his book…it’s really short…you can read it in about an hour. The rest of the book title is: 10 Things Nobody Told You about Being Creative. Some people may not like the title (steal like an artist). He’s not saying replicate exactly what you see, but take ideas from other artists. He says his “not so secret formula” is a two-step process. “Step one, ‘do good work,’ is incredibly hard. There are no shortcuts. Make stuff everyday. Know you’re going to suck for a while. Fail. Get better. Step two, ‘share it with people,’ was really hard up until about ten years ago or so. Now, it’s very simple: Put your stuff on the internet.”
And, like I do, when I find a new (to me) person, I like to find out more about them. Austin gave a Ted talk about his creative process (stealing) 😀 Give it a listen here.
I am beginning a new project for 2014. I am “stealing” the idea from Jane Davies. She is planning to make 400 pieces of art, 4 inches by 4 inches. I am going to make 200 tiny pieces of art this year….that’s MY goal. Jane has lots of videos on You Tube and on her sites. Here’s a link to her 4 x 4 project. When you go there, click on tutorials at the top of her blog. She is a very generous artist and shares lots of techniques and art projects. I wanted to take one of her current classes but the one I wanted is filled up already.
If anyone out there starts their own 4 x 4 project, let me know and I will put a link here. There are some other artists doing 4 x 4 ‘s too. The 4 x 4 Flickr group is here.
