New Journal

I have joined three different art journaling groups….I don’t know what I was thinking? 🙂  One of the groups is Julie’s group at Balzer Designs.  Over 300 people have signed up so far.  The second one is Traci Bautista’s  Art Journaling Daily group.  The other group is a Strathmore Online Workshop  .  As of now, they have three different groups you can join there….one starting now with Pam Carriker.  The other two will start later on during the year.

I have a ton of composition notebooks.  I buy them during the back to school sales every fall.  So, I’m using one as my new art journal.  I don’t know how long I will stick with it because I forgot how the pages curl up, etc. when you put paint on the thin paper.  However, I can flatten them fairly well by putting the notebook under a stack of heavy books.  If you are just starting out, this is an inexpensive way to get started.  Anyone can do this….you don’t have to be an artist to keep a visual journal.  You can glue magazine pictures or your own photos…whatever you want…write your thoughts, write poetry,  or use some found quotes about the pictures you choose.  There are many blogs that have wonderful ideas for keeping a visual or art journal.

Here’s my second page in my composition book…I didn’t post the first one here…I did put it on Flickr.  I tend to use one page and don’t put anything on the back side of the page.

I’m in all of these groups too and they kind of go hand in hand. I think we can do it! My pages are all on my blog if you want to check them out. Your drawing is great! Love black, but always forget about it.

I’m sort of monitoring those same groups but so far I’ve only made two journal pages this year.

I love love love the black background on your page. It really makes the bright colors stand out.

Love your page…and that diet plan sounds so interesting. I’ll have to look into that…I sure need to get motivated.
I’ve just started an art journal as well.
    Happy New Year!

When I started journaling every sketchbook or real journal seemed too good for my dabling. So I started by using an old planner. Since the pages are thin, I glued two together with PVA and gessoed over them. It still curls, but not as much. (I must check Traci’s group as well, thanks for the link!)

Hi Mary, I’m so glad I have more time to read blogs–I always love coming into your world of color–and I’m enjoying my journaling. I have to admit, I’m only just doing the Strathmore–but hey, it’s a start, and I’ve been trying to go to Traci’s blog everyday for her prompts.

Mary, a happy 2011 to you too! just wanted to comment here–if you gesso the back of the page too it will keep it from curling. I use those composition books too and try to gesso front and back of pages starting before I work in the book so I’m ahead of myself when I start.
